Unveiling microbial electricity driven anoxic ammonium removal

Microbial electricity-driven anoxic ammonium removal could remove from wastewater without the presence of oxygen (aeration) using electricity. This study aims at unveiling potential biologic pathways for bioelectrochemical oxidation to dinitrogen gas in an anaerobic system (BES). Known intermediate metabolites this process (hydroxylamine, nitrite and nitrate) were monitored two BES replicates. Ammonium was fully oxidized intermediates accumulation anodic chamber. Achromobacter sp. most abundant microorganism (up 60%, according sequence reads) mixed community. Hydroxylamine electroactive processes, reinforcing role electrode as electron acceptor oxidation. Taking it all together, can be removed by a combination different bio/electrochemical processes. A deeper understanding on how metabolisms are coupled together is required increasing current rates.
